Research: Genre Texts That Break The Rules - Music Video Genre
Most artists choose to make their videos conventional and follow a set narrative however some decide to break the rules of typical music videos.
My first example of a video that breaks the rules is Justice - D.A.N.C.E. The first aspect of the that doesn't match a standard video is that the artists aren't shown at all through out the clip. It features two men neither of which are part of Justice. This is unusual because one of the main aims of making a music video is to promote the artist.
A second aspect that challenges the conventions is that the majority of the clip is filmed in a medium shot. This definitely challenges it because typical music videos usually contain lots of close ups.
Unlike normal videos, this is all done in one take and all shot on location, a studio isn't used. Standard conventional videos are normally shot mainly in a studio with some location shots too. Justice have decided to shoot the whole video in dark corridors in what looks like a bar or club. This is to emphasise the T shirts so they stand out.
My second example of a video that challenges the conventions of music videos is Bruno Mars - The Lazy Song. Unlike the Justice video this does feature the artist however there are some similarities. Like before this is all done in one take and shot on one place but this time in a studio which challenges the usual conventions because there are no location shots used. It is also made to look like its all shot on a webcam as you can see before he switches it on at the start of the clip.
The video is also mainly shot in medium shot with very few close ups. Again this challenges the usual conventions because most standard videos use lots of close ups of the artists face as the aim is to promote the artist.
My final example of an unconventional music video is Oasis - The Importance of Being Idle. The first aspect of the video that breaks the rules is that the artists do feature in the video however only in the background so they are made to look like extras. The entire song is lip synced by an actor. Like the other two videos this is unusual because the main aim of creating a video is to promote the artist but in this video the audience would be lead to believe the actor is the lead singer. Oasis are so self assured in their own success that they don't feel the need to promote themselves in their videos.
Another factor that breaks the rules is that the whole video is shot in black and white. This is because they have set it in the past. All the mise-en-scene, locations and character appearance emphasise this. This would be unusual for typical main stream videos which are rarely black and white.
