Research Our Chosen Sub-Genre of Music Video

The genre we intend to follow is a Pop music video.


Pixie Lott is the artist we are mostly focusing on for our project.





Here is another music video we liked, and will maybe use to get ideas for our video.





Jessie J is an artist who we think would be good to follow as she is original and stands out from other artists.





Conventions of Genre
Pop Genre - The typical conventions of the 'Pop' genre are:


- Colorful
- Usually fun and light hearted to appeal to a younger audience
- Shows artists and dancers doing dance routines
- Video usually has a narrative which links in with the lyrics of the song
- Close-ups of artist's face to show either innocents or emotion depending on what the song is about
- Artist/band tend to wear revealing outfits for the 'male gaze' or to influence their audience


Pixie Lott - All About Tonight:
This music video follows the genre conventions of Pop music. In the video, close-up shots have often been used. At the beginning there is a close-up shot of Pixie Lott walking, and through out the video, there are close-ups of her face, showing her innocence. Another way in which this video follows the typical conventions of the pop genre is the way the artist dresses. She is wearing very little clothing, showing a lot of skin which attracts male audiences and influences young people as they see her outfits as fashionable. There isn't really a narrative in the video as its more of a performance, but it still fits in with the lyrics of the song, which is all about a night out. All the dance routines through-out the music video also fit in with the pop genre, making it fun to watch and appealing to a younger audience.


Christina Aguilera - Candyman:
Once again, this video doesn't have a particular narrative as it is more of a performance. But, it is colorful and contains dance routines which appeals to the younger audiences. These aspects make the video fun and entertaining to watch therefore following the typical conventions of the pop genre. The mise-en-scene of the video also follows the typical conventions of the pop genre as the artist is wearing various girlie outfits, showing a lot of skin which attracts the male audience.


Jessie J - Price tag:
Between all three music videos shown above, I think Jessie J's video follows the conventions of pop more than the other two. This is due to the mise-en-scene used; the colorful background/lighting, her original outfits which show of her legs (the male gaze) and the close-up shots of her face. The video also contains dance routines, but not as intense as the other two videos.
